Is it suitable for me?
It may be considered for essential tremor that remains disabling despite medication. The team assesses your diagnosis, symptoms, scans, skull characteristics and ability to tolerate treatment in an MRI scanner. DBS and other approaches may also be discussed.
Treatment by a specialist team
The Queen Square service brings together neurology, neurosurgery, radiology and specialist support. Mr Akram works within this multidisciplinary service. Assessment and follow-up are integral to the treatment, rather than separate from it.
What should I expect?
Treatment is generally performed while you are awake so that symptoms and possible side effects can be assessed. The service will explain preparation, positioning, what the treatment feels like and arrangements for recovery.
Benefits & possible side effects
Treatment aims to reduce tremor, especially in the treated hand. Improvement varies, symptoms may return, and it does not cure the underlying condition. Numbness, balance or walking problems and speech changes can occur; some effects may persist. Unlike DBS settings, the lesion cannot be adjusted or reversed.
